5 Must Have Apps I Always Install Before Flying to the Philippines

Posted on 2026-02-27 by admin

Traveling to the Philippines sounds dreamy (because it is), but let me tell you  once you land in Manila or Cebu, things can get a little chaotic if you’re not prepared. Between traffic, island transfers, and figuring out local payments, you’ll thank yourself for having the right apps ready.

Here are five apps I personally consider non-negotiable before heading to the Philippines.

1. Grab Your Lifesaver for Transport (and Food)

If you’ve used Uber before, Grab is basically your best friend here. In cities like Manila and Cebu City, taxis can be hit-or-miss. liku88 Grab saves you from negotiating fares or worrying about getting overcharged.

What I love? It’s not just rides. You can also order food and groceries. There was one rainy night in Makati when I didn’t feel like going out GrabFood literally saved dinner.

Pro tip: Download it before you land and connect your card early.

2. Google Maps  Still the MVP

Yes, obvious choice. But trust me, it’s essential.

Island hopping sounds romantic until you realize ferry terminals can be confusing. Google Maps helps with public transport routes, jeepney directions (sometimes), and walking paths. It’s not perfect in smaller islands, but in major cities, it’s solid.

I also use the “Save” feature to pin beaches, cafés, and random spots I find on Instagram.

3. GCash  Cashless is King Here

The Philippines still uses a lot of cash, but GCash is everywhere now. From convenience stores to small restaurants, you’ll see QR codes for payment.

If you’re staying longer or have local friends, this app makes splitting bills and paying easier. Some island tours even accept GCash.

It just makes you feel more “local,” you know?

4. Klook For Tours & Island Hopping Deals

Booking tours on the spot can work, but I prefer checking prices first. Klook is great for comparing island hopping packages, airport transfers, and even SIM card deals.

I once booked a last-minute tour in El Nido through Klook and it was cheaper than what I was quoted on the beach. Not always the case, but worth checking.

5. Booking.com  Flexible Stays Save You

The Philippines is the kind of place where plans change. You might fall in love with Siargao and extend your stay. Or leave earlier because of weather.

Booking.com is great because of flexible cancellation options. I always filter by “free cancellation” just in case. Island weather can be unpredictable, and ferries sometimes get canceled.

Final Thoughts Before You Go

The Philippines is beautiful, warm, and full of surprises  in a good way. But it’s not always as structured as Singapore or Japan, so having the right apps gives you that extra layer of comfort.

Honestly, once you sort out transport, payments, and tours, the rest is just enjoying sunsets, mango shakes, and random beach conversations with strangers who somehow become friends.

Install these before your flight, and you’ll land feeling prepared  not overwhelmed.
